Activities and Attractions

Queens Victoria Markets

"The Queen Victoria Market is famous as the largest and oldest market in the Southern Hemisphere. Opened in 1878, its historic buildings are a natural heritage site and many of the shops from which the traders operate today, are unchanged from days gone by. The Dairy Hall is perhaps the best known with its distinctive shop fronts and its multicultural offerings in the 38 delicatessens that lie within its walls."

Location:
513 Elizabeth St, Melbourne VIC 3000

Sailing & Boating in Melbourne

Melbourne is located on the largest embayment in Australia, which means there are small tidal variations with consistent fair sailing conditions. Yachting is one of Melbourne’s most popular sports, with about 20 clubs lining the shores of Port Phillip, many of which welcome visitors who want to volunteer to crew on racing boats.

Some of the larger clubs include:

The Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron
St Kilda +61 3 9534 0227
Royal Brighton Yacht Club +61 3 9592 3089
Sandringham Yacht Club +61 3 9598 7444
Hobsons Bay Yacht Club, Williamstown +61 3 9397 6393

The 253-metre-high Rialto Towers Building is the tallest office building in the southern hemisphere and one of the most recognised buildings in Melbourne. Take the high-speed lift to Level 55 for the Melbourne Observation Deck, which boasts spectacular 360-degree views of Melbourne and the surrounding area.

Phillip Island Nature Park

From the viewing stands and boardwalk, visitors can watch Little Penguins emerge each night from the surf and waddle to their burrows on the foreshore. Great Ocean Road

Snaking 300 kilometres past cliffs, rainforests and sunken ships, the Great Ocean Road is unquestionably one of Australia’s most impressive stretches of road.

From Geelong to the South Australia border, the road winds its way along Victoria’s rugged coastline, with ocean beaches on one side and the forests and mountains
of the Otway Ranges on the other.

The most famous attraction is the Twelve Apostles, which caused quite a stir last July when one of the Apostles collapsed into a pile of rubble. There are still eight
of the rock formations rising from the Southern Ocean in one of the most spectacular natural wonders you'll see.

The Wine & High Country

Fresh air, clearwater streams, blue skies and looming mountains are what make Legends, Wine and High Country so special.

The region has inspired tales of such high drama and folklore - from Glenrowan, scene of outlaw Ned Kelly’s last stand, to The Man From Snowy River, a famous Australian poem turned into an enjoyably over-the-top film.

If you're keen to bask in the clear mountain air, there are year-round trail rides and summer musters, and the chance to unfurl your sleeping bag in huts previously occupied by backwoods horsemen.

This is the region for snow, snow and more snow (and snow-sports). The major resorts of Mount Buller, Mount Hotham, Mount Buffalo and Falls Creek are regarded among the best in the country and offer downhill ski and snowboard runs, tobogganing and cross-country treks.

There's also abseiling, paragliding, hang-gliding, white-water rafting, mountain biking, caving and kayaking.

Tasmania

Discover an island of spectacular wilderness and wildlife, beaches, pretty villages and uncrowded roads.

Separated from mainland Australia by the 240 km stretch of Bass Strait, Tasmania is a land apart - a place of wild and beautiful landscapes; friendly, welcoming people; a pleasant, temperate climate; wonderful wine and food; a rich history; and a relaxed island lifestyle.

According to experienced travellers who’ve criss-crossed the globe in search of excellence, Tasmania has one of the world’s 10 best beaches (Wineglass Bay, US-based Outside magazine), the world’s best little town (Strahan, Chicago Tribune) and was rated equal third, in the world, for wise land stewardship by National Geographic.

Hop on a boat or fly into this stunning island. Just talk to our friend travel desk staff.
